Nadona of Bitra, Lady: Lady Holder of Bitra Hold at the start of the Second Pass, spouse of Chalkin. Children by Chalkin: Chaldon, Briskin, Luccha and Lonada. Daughter of Lord Brenton of Nerat and half-sister of Lord Franco of Nerat. She had very long finger nails which were dubbed "dragon-talon nails", a naturally florid complexion and pale eyes [RSR/5:143, 154]. She elected to stay behind after the exile of her husband. It turned out she was exceedingly well acquainted with her own rights as granted by the Charter, down to the Clause and relevant sub-paragraphs when confronted with the measures taken against her husband at his arrest, while the Holder couple had kept there holders ignorant of their rights [RSR/13:303]. She had problems adjusting to the new situation at Bitra Hold after Lord Vergerin took over from her exiled husband and had her own quarters at the Hold [RSR/16:391].

Nathi Space War: a space war that took place roughly half a century prior to the landing of the colonists on Pern, the basic cause of which was an attack by aliens, who tried to take possession of the Shavian colonies [RSR/4:119]. A lot of planets were bombarded by the Nathi [RSR/7:194]. Among the besieged and bombarded planets had been Sirius III and Vega IV [RSR/196]. Whole generations had grown up on colonial planets, living in deep shelters. The technology this brought, like using the magma core taps to provide heat and solar panels for power eventually benefited Pern since among the colonists were a lot of the Nathi space war survivors [RSR/7:197].

Needlethorn: a herb native to Pern. A succulent perennial which produces needle spines that emit a toxin, killing small animals and insects which it them dissolves and absorbs (a la jack-in-the-pulpits or Venus fly-traps). In its dormant stage, the needles dry out and become hollow, and strong enough to use as disposable hypodermic needles. Grows in the tropical regions usually near ging trees, whose sap can be used to close puncture wounds. Known locations for needlethorn are Ista and Nerat [Mor]. The skin of the plant has fine hairs that can cause irritation. and /or inflamation of the skin if one comes into contact with it. The spines are poisonous through spring and summer. It seems the flesh is tasty. In Moreta, Dragonlady of Pern, Moreta remarks: "During the spring and summer the bush has an odor to attract snakes and insects. The hollow spines suck essential juices from the creature the plant impales, and also rainwater." It is said to have several cactus-like "stalks" from a single base broadleaf. The Dragonlovers Guide to Pern shows three stalks, three leaves (mistalenly?). The closest Terran equivalent would be a strange combination of a Venus flytrap and a cactus. Nettleweed: Urtica dioica (stinging settle). A spring tonic. A perennial, single-stalked, may form clusters. Saw-toothed opposing dark green leaves. Leaves and stem have small stinging hairs. Grows to 5'. Hardy to -35 F. Grows in weedy places, often near water.
Terran nettle is high in Vitamin C, accounting for its use as a tonic. A decoction boiled from the young shoots (which are less prickly than the adult plant) has been used to treat asthma, and was though to have tonic properties on hair as well. [Submitted by Jennifer Quail].

Lover of Zenor [DK, Dfire].
Nuelsk: green watchwher at Camp Natalon in Crom Hold. Formerly known as Kisk (when Kindan was its handler) but changed names when Nuella became its handler [DK, Dfire].
Numbweed: a plant native to Pern. A twiggy shrub with plaquey, thorny greenery and paired spade-shaped leaves with a terminating leaf at the end of the branch. The plant has a grey-green colour. They sprout tifts of blossoms, similar to statice. Growing in tropical and subtropical zones (jungly areas) with Nerat and Southern as obvious, known locations. The sap is a powerful topical anesthetic. It can be used straight from the plant or boiled down into a salve or medicinal cream which, when smeared on wounds, kills all feeling, used as an anesthetic. Also made into a powder for internal use. Too much numbweed will cause bleeding and scarring. The salve requires three days stewing to prepare, after that one additional day is needed to strain it, and to skim the juice to the right consistency for the salve. Runners carry an oiled packet that has a cloth soaked in numweed to cleanse and ease scratches.
Closest Terran equivalent: numbweed seems closest in use and growth to the coca shrub of high-altitude South America. The coca plant's leaves are used to produce cocaine, which is both a topical anesthetic and stimulant. Taken internally, numbweed has narcotic rather than stimulant properties. As such its closest Earth analog are the synthetics lignocaine and procaine (trade name Novocain) which have the topical effect of cocaine without the stimulant aspect.
